Swellendam: SA’s third oldest town

Swellendam is South Africa’s third oldest town. Spoilt by views of the Langeberg mountain and historical buildings, it is worth a stop.

Be sure to stop at the Dro- stdy Museum and walk through the big white Dutch Reformed church in the main street (Voortrek street).

Kids will love a visit to the fairy sanctuary where they can wander and explore around the safe garden. Pack drinks and snacks while you chill in the creative gar- den. Also check if they are open.

Wildebraam Berry Farm
offers free liquer, syrups and home- made preserve tastings. Grab some nice gifts to take home here.

On your way to Ashton there is a cheese shop on your right where you can buy and taste a variety of local cheeses.

 The people are not always friendly but it is worth a stop.
Swellendam has a game farm with giraffes at Buffeljagsrivier called Kweto Game Farm.

Entrance is R250 per car. We can organize a trip on a safari bakkie at R400 per person. Picnic options are also available at R350 per couple. Please organize in advance. For the more adventurous people there are loads of hiking op- tions in Marloth and Bontebok Park Nature Reserves. The hike to the Duiwelsbos waterfall is worth the steep climb. Pack your swimwear and drinks. The Bee Shop is a good stop if you are curious about these insects and seek real good honey. Suggestions for restau- rants: Tredici (coffee and a bite), The Republic (wifi, burgers, pizzas, craft beers, craft gin – something for every- one), Lilly’s (they have a tree house for kids, enjoy a burger or woodfired pizza and a bottle of wine while they play), the Garden Shack (best sea- food and the owners love kids!), La Belle Alliance (beautiful setting on the river, super great eggs benedict, Drostdy Restaurant (romantic candle- light setting with affordable gourmet food) and Koornlands (fine dining with South African meats like crocodile, etc.). Swellendam has several gro- cery stores, pharmacies, butcheries – everything you need!
