Coming from Cape Town with the N1
The N1 is the inland option to enter the Route 62 or going to Swellendam, offering a more Karoo-like landscape and loads of wineries. Other than the Cape Winelands, the Robertson Val- ley Wineries offers free tastings at most farms. Be sure to drive slowly through towns as there are lots of speed cameras.
After Worcester you can first stop at Nuy on the Hill with their great view, kid’s play area, craft beers, af- fordable great wine and good food.
Rooiberg Winery’s restau- rant and cellar is a MUST stop. Their wines are excellently priced and the chef’s food is amazing. If you love champagne Gra- ham Beck would be an appreciated stop. The tasting however is not free.
Two great restaurant options in Robertson are Four Cousins (you can do tastings there, and there is a safe kiddies playarea) and Bourbon Street (extensive menu with big por- tions).
From Robertson exit the circle to your right to visit some wineries. Just outside Robertson are Spring- field Wine Estate; pricy wines but splendid quality.
Bon Courage has great ports and you have the option to get a pic- nic and go on a boat trip at Viljoens- drift winery.Van Loveren offers a wide variety of food and wine pairing op- tions. Their Christina’s restaurant is also recommendable.
De Wetshof Wine Estate is wellknown for their great Chardon- nay’s. Enjoy a propper, personal wine tasting if you are serious about wine and learn something. The tasting may cost something.
If you are heading back to the R62 be sure to stop at Excelsior winery where you can blend, bottle and lable your own wine. Be sure not to miss out on this personal ex- perience. Apart from the memory, it is also a great gift to take home under
R100.
According to some people Platform62 in Ashton is also a great pitstop to do a variety of tastings and grab a quick bite.
On your way to Swellen- dam you can taste and stock up on cheese at La Montanara Cheesery.
Have lunch and good wine under the pecan nut trees at Jan Harmsgat Wine Estate (about 15km before Swellendam).
